What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a practice based on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Western medical acupuncture has more scientific basis and is only used after medical diagnosis. It involves inserting fine needles into certain points of the body. These are known as acupuncture points

What are the benefits of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture points help with many different things. The different points can be accessed to treat myriad conditions.

These include:

  • Musculoskeletal problems

  • Gastrointestinal disorders

  • Chronic pain

  • Mental health problems like anxiety and depression

It's not yet fully understood how acupuncture works. But it's generally accepted that the insertion of needles has an effect on nerves. Tapping into your nervous system can override signals from the brain to help relieve pain and other problems.

Scared of needles? The fine needles used in acupuncture are a world away from those used to give injections. You may feel tingles, achiness, heaviness, warmth or even a temporary shock. But no pain, you'll forget needles are even being used.

Acupuncture goes hand in hand with physiotherapy. It's especially useful in the treatment of inflammatory joint conditions. Acupuncture's pain relieving abilities mean that you could do better at physio if you receive both. With pain relief from acupuncture, you'll be better able to perform your recommended exercises. So you'll improve faster.

There are no side effects at all with acupuncture. Because there's no medication involved, only physical work, you won't have anything but positive effects.

Mike has been overseeing my personal fitness for several years, and following a skiing accident earlier this year is now also involved as a physio and trainer in my recovery. He has been very helpful in tailoring various exercises to my level of recovery, and is always upbeat and inspirational in his attitude. A pleasure to work with.
